Is Fairview becoming Boise’s Chinden? Another used car lot pops up

Fairview Ave. in Boise and Chinden Blvd. in Garden City have a lot of similarities – both are long, wide boulevards that stretch from the edge of Downtown Boise out to each city’s limits.

But until recently, the roads were different in overall character. While Chinden was dotted with used car lots, RV dealerships and semi-industrial uses – Fairview once had a more retail and restaurant-intensive use pattern.

Now much of Fairview is changing – especially the two-mile stretch from Orchard St. to Cole Rd. becoming dominated by car sales and payday loans.

The former Arby’s restaurant will be partially torn down and replaced by a large metal building and surrounding used car lot – the latest in a string of once-thriving eateries that now serve as a place to buy a used car.

The former Blimpie Subs & Salads, Pizza Hut, 7-Eleven and numerous other sites that used to serve as retail or restaurants have become used car lots.

Trucks and Cars unlimited will demolish about half of the 3,174 square foot restaurant and rebuild a slightly larger metal warehouse type structure on the back half of the property. The new structure will hold a 3-bay auto detailing shop, according to filings with the City of Boise. The project was approved in December.
