Why are crews digging up the new City Hall plaza?

Work crews are digging holes and moving dirt at the new Boise City Hall Plaza – just a few months after the renovated space opened to the public.

City officials first decided to rework the plaza along Capitol Blvd. after leaks were found down into the underground parking garage and mechanical rooms.

Work wrapped up this summer, but two new leaks have been discovered – putting crews back to work making fixes.

Colin Hickman, City of Boise Public Works Communications Manager said the work is routine – and under warranty, with no cost to taxpayers.

“That waterproofing is basically a layer to ensure that the structure underneath – the mechanical control room and parking garage are protected,” he said.

A leak along Capitol Blvd. around an electrical box was found — with another issue along Idaho St. around a vent.

Hickman said it is typical to find issues and make repairs after a project is done.
