With Mattress Firm getting soft, another chain plans Boise store

Oh Mattress Firm, we hardly knew ye.

The sorta confounding chain of mattress stores which liked to have outlets across the street and next door from each other has started nixing local stores (mostly the ones across the street and next door to each other… go figure).

The seller of sleep surfaces dropped from a whopping five stores inside and around the Boise Towne Square to just two.

On Glenwood, the chain had two stores that were 300 feet apart and closed one.

I looked into the swarm of stores back in 2016 and got an answer that didn’t satisfy most people:

“We use a proprietary system that defines zones by things such as population and drive time to decide when and where to add additional stores in various markets,” Mattress Firm’s G’Nai Blackmore said. “This sometimes results in having Mattress Firm locations in close proximity, as seen in Boise.”

Overall the company has gone from 12 stores to six. They are in bankruptcy court and have been dumping stores nationwide.

MattressRx comes to Boise

A Caldwell-based mattress store is planning to expand into the Boise area, and still sees opportunity in the mall area.

MattressRx has applied to take over the former Shoe Carnival store on Milwaukee St. The party stopped at the shoe store several years ago, but MattressRx plans to take over the nearly 10,000 square foot spot in coming weeks.
