Construction starts on large 2,000-home Boise development with new name

Idaho AGC Going Up

Locale is the new name for a large 2,000-home project in South Boise. CBH Homes announced it changed the name from Syringa Valley, which the development used in the planning and approval phases.

“Syringa Valley didn’t bring the feelings and space we wanted to build here,” CBH Homes president Corey Barton said in a prepared statement. “Locale will be a place to be close, be home and live local.”

Locale centers around Lake Hazel Rd., between Orchard St. and Cole Rd.

With more than 600 acres, the Syringa Valley development is the third in Boise to follow a so-called specific plan. That type of process, first used in Harris Ranch, outlines vision, principles, transportation and other factors the development will follow.

Locale Boise features

The plan calls for a significant amount of low-density residential areas, with other areas set aside for medium density, commercial and industrial areas. A village center area would feature a more urban design mixing both commercial and residential use in the middle of the project.

Locale Boise also includes a future grade school site and park – and surrounds a future high school/middle school site.

The development will feature a trail system, plus five neighborhood parks with pools, according to the specific plan. A ten-acre city park to be named for Boise resident Kirsten Coughlin is also planned.

Area residents initially raised concern over Syringa Valley, culminating in an hours-long Boise City Council meeting in late 2016. The council ultimately voted to approve the project.

A new bridge over the New York Canal connects Lake Hazel all the way from Orchard St. to Cole Rd. Lake Hazel is set to eventually extend all the way to Interstate 84 near Isaacs Canyon.
