Albertsons Companies announced late Friday it would install plexiglass “sneeze guards” at all of its 2,200 stores in the coming weeks.
“We recognize that we provide an essential service to our communities,” Albertsons President and CEO Vivek Sankaran said in a release. “We are doing everything we can to provide a safe, secure, and comfortable shopping space for our valued customers. This is an extra step to protect our associates who are in constant contact with the public and provide our customers with extra reassurance as well.”
Albertsons also paused self-service bars – including soups, wings and salad. Last week Albertsons stopped offering samples.
The new checkstand sneeze guards will go in over the next two weeks. The company, like many other outlets still open to the public, stepped up cleaning efforts. It’s also asking workers to stay home if they are sick.
Earlier this week, Albertsons said it would add $2 billion to its loan facility as a precaution during the COVID-19 outbreak.
