Now, work on a new retail project will add a much-needed grocery option to the area.

Preliminary work started on Village Center at Heron River project on Highway 44/State St near Plummer Rd.

The project will be anchored by Ridley’s Family Markets, the Jerome-based chain of grocery stores. Ridley’s, which operates stores in Middleton, Kuna, and McCall, will add the first full-service grocery store to the area. Plans call for a 57,192 square foot store facing State St. adjacent to Plummer Way, with parking for 234 cars.

“Characterized by its distinguishing design, landscaping, and water features, The Village Center at Heron River provides a vibrant, yet tranquil setting for work and leisure,” project developers wrote. “With opportunities offered for relaxed outdoor dining in the plaza, the ability to complete errands at local service providers and shopping for unique, must-have treasures; convenience is merged with the feel of small-town life and the backdrop of Boise Rivers natural splendor.”

Future phases of the development include several additional buildings, including sites for drive-thru restaurants, a bank, general retail, and office sites. It sits adjacent to the Heron River housing development.

The Ridley’s store has been planned since at least 2010, according to documents filed with the City of Star. Heron River Development, managed by John L. Scott principal R. Craig Groves is developing the project.

Ridleys completed a complete overhaul of its store in McCall in 2018.

Boise-based grocery giant Albertsons also acquired a parcel of land for a future grocery store to the west of the Ridley’s site. A timeline for that store has not yet been announced.
