Long-planned Boise brewery launches with community-focused beer project

Local restaurant owner Dave Krick hopes to someday launch a brewery concept in Downtown Boise. He first told BoiseDev about it in 2016.

In the interim, he added Diablo & Sons to his collection of downtown restaurants, which includes Bittercreek and Red Feather.

Now, the brewery, called Works Progress Administration, will start to move forward — by focusing on the beer.

“That’s our intent – to launch this brewery with collaboration benefit beers and work toward establishing a full brewery here in Boise,” Krick said. “We’re just going about it creatively because we believe the community needs WPA now.”

WPA will start producing beers by the case, partnering with established local breweries to produce special varieties with a charitable donation component.

Lost Grove and Payette Brewing teamed with WPA to launch a City of Good beer. The pale ale will give all its proceeds toward the community effort that connects restaurant kitchens with people in the community in need of food. Lost Grove brewed the beer, Payette packed it up – and customers can buy six-pack cans at Boise Co-Op locations, as well as the two breweries.

Krick said the pandemic prompted them to launch the brand with this concept.

“It turns out that WPA has been conditioning in the cask for five years,” Krick said. “It’s been waiting for the right time, and with
our community in crisis from the coronavirus pandemic, that time is now.”

Another community-focused beer will launch this summer. Krick said his goal for WPA remains to build a physical brewing facility down the road.
