Today, BoiseDev will launch a pair of related initiatives to add coverage of the economic recovery of two key tourism-backed economies: Sun Valley and McCall.
We hired reporter Autum Robertson to provide extensive coverage of the areas as they begin to plot the future after the COVID-19 pandemic began impacting the areas. You will also see additional stories from other members of the BoiseDev team.
The year-long series will take a deep dive look at how each of the areas evolves and changes in the wake of the pandemic. Initial stories focus on some of the unexpected impacts, including a boom in cabin rentals in McCall, and a van maker seeing success near Sun Valley. You’ve already seen us at work in recent weeks – we first broke news of the mandatory mask ordinance in McCall, and the changes coming to Sun Valley resort.
Beyond tourism, the effort will look at how the economy of each area changes and adapts. While McCall and Sun Valley share some traits as far as tourism, we will look at each independently, as the two locations bring their own sets of opportunities, challenges, and approaches. We hope to hear from members of the community on what stories they are interested in – you can reach us at email@example.com.
Coverage for the McCall area will include Donnelley, Cascade, Tamarack, Brundage and more. In Sun Valley, we’ll include Hailey, Bellevue and the rest of the Wood River Valley.
BoiseDev members will get early access to Future in Focus stories each day as part of their membership. (If you aren’t a member, you can join, and save $20 with the promo code HOTNEWS.) We’ll also send a monthly newsletter with a roundup of stories free – click the button below to sign up.
The project is partially backed by a pair of grants BoiseDev obtained earlier this spring. The dollars, from the Local Media Association, Facebook Journalism Project, and Google News Initiative, helped add staff and other project-related expenses.
