Franz to close State Street location, build bigger destination garden center

Franz has been a go-to place for garden and landscape supplies and services in the Treasure Valley since 1971.

Now, it’s building a brand new destination garden center in Nampa and closing the State Street location.

Historic location

The new garden center will be at what was once the Naugle Ranch located at 11th avenue off HWY 20/26.

“It was a beautiful working ranch for many decades going back to the 1940’s. In its day it was beautifully landscaped and well-manicured,” Franz Witte president Seneca Hull said.

“We are excited to keep its historic charm while building something for the future as well.”

On a map the location is almost right in the center of Meridian, Eagle, Star, Middleton and Caldwell.

“It’s hard to leave the State Street location because it is close to so many of our customers,” Hull said. “But we feel most will follow and the move will also expand our retail market.”

Destination garden center

Construction on a brand new, “state-of-the-art” garden center started this month.

It will include an 80×80 foot glass greenhouse structure and year-round shopping with indoor and outdoor décor, house plants, pottery, trees, shrubs, and more.

“We hope to have a place to meet, have coffee with a friend and walk the display gardens and check out the historical structures and displays to get fabulous ideas of things to do in your own homes,” Hull said.

Hull said they were inspired by other garden centers in bigger cities likeSwanson’s in Seattle, Portland Nursery, Roger’s Gardens in Corona del Mar, CA and Sun River Gardens in Orem Utah .

Franz Witte’s landscape and maintenance teams will also work out of the new location.

Celebrating half a century

The garden center is scheduled to open next spring which is also Franz’s 50th anniversary.

In 1971, Boise resident Franz Witte started the company as a design/build firm.

“Through word of mouth and cool landscapes turned into a nursery with the specimen materials Franz couldn’t find in the valley,” Hull said.

Now, the company offers commercial and residential landscaping, commercial landscape management, snow services and nursery retail and wholesale products.

In 2007, Franz Witte opened another location in McCall.

“We have always done work in McCall with so many clients having second homes up there.”

The State Street location will be open through the fall. Hull said they are expecting to open the new garden center in next spring.
