Downtown coffee shop’s temporary closure becomes permanent (but another one opened)

Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters listed the closure of its only Idaho store as “temporary.”

It’s not.

The shop, in the Idaho Building on 8th St. at Bannock St. in Boise will not reopen, according to an updated listing online. A sign in the window list a “Store closing sale!,” but the doors are locked and lights are off. The phone rings without answering.

Our efforts over the past week to get a comment from Thomas Hammer officials didn’t get a reply.

Thomas Hammer, based in Spokane, is just one of a handful of non-local coffee shops in the downtown area. Locally-owned competitor Dawson Taylor, which operates a store right across 8th St., recently underwent a remodel.

A new shop, Broadcast Coffee, will open a permanent location in the new 11th & Idaho soon – but started a pop-up at 1726 W Main St in the Vagabond Bakery according to owner Barry Faught.
