Puerto Rican cuisine lovers can now say “Wepa!” to the new restaurant being built in Garden City.
“Wepa!” is a Spanish word used in Puerto Rico to express joy and celebration. Owners of the new local restaurant note online the exclamation is “what we aim to have our guests shout as they enjoy the fine cuisine of the crown jewel of the Caribbean.”
The menu includes dishes influenced from a mix of Spanish, Taino Indian and Afro-Caribbean food.
Although the brand new building off 35th and Clay St. is still under construction, Wepa Cafe is offering catering anywhere from 2 to 200 people.
The restaurant will also donate a portion of its profits to the Hurricane Maria relief fund. In 2017, the category five storm left catastrophic damage and killed nearly 3,000 people.

“Wepa!’s mission is to drive awareness amongst our local community and provide resources back to the island that will go directly to the relief efforts.”
