Decaying Boise gym torn down to make way for large apartment complex

The long saga of a dilapidated former gym in SE Boise continues.

BoiseDev first started reporting on the property in 2018, when Crunch Fitness planned to revamp the old ParkCenter Swim and Racquet club for a new gym. But despite signs going up on the property, the gym never appeared.

Now the old building, covered in graffiti and vandalism, is gone. Crews with ESI Construction tore it down this week.

The former owner, Bay Shore Oil Company, put the property on the market in October. Bay Shore is controlled by the same folks who own portions of the Boise Spectrum. In November, according to records obtained by BoiseDev, Mustang 75, LLC purchased the property. Colliers listed the property at $4.5 million.

Under Bay Shore’s ownership, the project won approval from the City of Boise for a 125-unit apartment complex. The entitlement (permission from the city) for the project transferred over to the new owners.

From our last update, designers adjusted the project slightly to address neighbor and planner concerns – including lowering the height of the project along the residential neighborhood street of Division Ave. They also adjusted the design of the building to add additional detailing along Division.

The project would also include about 5,500 square feet of commercial space situated at the corner of Division and Beacon St. Plans show up to three small retail spaces. Most of the rest of the first floor would include parking for vehicles and bicycles. A mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments would sit on the remaining floors.

The now-demolished ParkCenter Swim and Racquet Club first went up in 1984, and featured an indoor pool, racquetball courts and workout areas. It changed hands – and names – a number of times over the decades. It’s been vacant for the better part of the last decade.
