Prepare for closures, delays: construction on main route to McCall to restart

If you’re traveling from Boise to McCall on Highway 55 be prepared for considerable traffic delays.

Last year, the Idaho Transportation Department started working on a major project to improve Highway 55 between Smiths Ferry and Rainbow Bridge.

Starting Monday, March 15, construction for this project will resume. Travelers should plan for full road closures Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as crews blast rock to widen the road. Along with widening the road, ITD will add guardrails and straighten this curvy stretch of highway to improve safety. When Highway 55 is not closed, there will be one-way alternating traffic with 15-minute delays.

When ITD first launched the project last fall, traffic backed up for hours due to an automated traffic signal. The department and contractor on the project later fixed the issue.

These closures will be in place through May and then ITD crews will switch to summer operations.

ITD expects the entire Highway 55 Smiths Ferry project to be completed by late- fall of 2022. To stay in the loop and receive updates, you can text “Alerts” to (833) 480-0255.
