A new Downtown Boise pub just opened. It already closed. It’s unclear why

BoiseDev told you about the new Union Block Bar & Eatery on Idaho St. downtown earlier this year. It first opened for takeout, then opened a full-service menu.

But the bar and restaurant already closed – for good. Signs in the window indicate the space is for lease. Union Block took over the bar area of the former Old Chicago restaurant, which closed last year. Old Chicago closed the large restaurant right before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Union Block Bar & Eatery shares ownership with Mai Thai restaurant, located next door in the same building at 730 W. Idaho St.. We reached out to owner Billy Pothikamjorn who did not reply to our request for comment.

The Union Block eatery mostly retained the Old Chicago footprint and layout, with updates to lighting, paint, and decor.

Ken Howell’s Parklane Management Company owns the restaurant spaces. Howell said he doesn’t “really know the full answer as to why” the restaurant closed.

A sign in the window, since removed, blamed the closure on a conflict with the landlord. Howell said “those matters, even if credible, seem unrelated to closing.”

Mai Thai remains open.
