Meridian’s next library branch will be in the Orchard Park development.
BoiseDev previously told you about Orchard Park, which will offer feature residential, retail, office space, and a library. The library district has since announced design plans for the library.
The 15,000 square foot library in northwest Meridian would have a 24-hour hold room where users can pick up their books, an active child’s room, a sensory room, a large meeting room, a technology wall, and more.
The library layout focuses a lot on accessibility. The website said ‘You will see this reflected in everything from the height of library furniture to the layout of the bathrooms.’
“Everything inside is designed for accessibility for people that need that accessibility,” Meridian Library District Trustee Jeff Kohler said. “One of the rooms which will be sort of a sensory space, so that would be for library users that need a room that’s got gentle noise tactile features. For example individuals with autism, ADHD, PTSD, any of those sensory disabilities that we will be designed for their use.”
More libraries and timeline
The library would be within walking distance of Rocky Mountain High School. Because of this, one of the major features is a learning lab.
“We’ll have some of the same features (as unBound) equipment for different ages,” Kohler said. “STEM education resources. (I) imagine there will be things like 3D printers and other technologies interest such as. It’s right down the road from Rocky Mountain High School so it’ll be convenient for those students to go there after school.”
Kohler said the plan is to have a library in each of Meridian’s four corners plus the central Cherry Ln. Library. Currently, there is unBound, Cherry Ln., Silverstone, and then the Tiny Library at the hill near the YMCA.
Kohler said the library will be in a 20-year lease with the option to buy the building. He added that construction should be complete in December 2022.
“We’re just excited that we’ve got a branch in that location,” Kohler said. “When we did community surveys, we noticed that we always had good bookmobile attendance in that northwest part of Meridian… there’s a pretty big neighborhood Paramount, which will be within walking distance of the branch and so it’ll be a good fit for not only that neighborhood but the entire northwest part of Meridian which is growing so quickly.”
