Following ballot recount Luke Cavener will keep his seat on Meridian City Council

Meridian City Council incumbent Luke Cavener will officially retain his spot for Seat 6.

Cavener faced off against political newcomer Mike Hon in a close race that came down to 56 votes. Scott Garbarino, who did not campaign, was also on the ballot and earned 785 votes.

The close results and a ballot glitch that resulted in the names on the absentee ballot not being properly rotated led Hon to ask for a recount in precincts 1418, 1420, and 2003.

The results of the recount yielded no changes. The original official results of the Seat 6 election stay the same with Cavener winning with 6,380 votes, and Hon with 6,324.

The Ada County Elections Office recounted the absentee and early voting ballots.

Cavener spoke to BoiseDev about how he appreciates all the hard work and integrity various staff showed throughout this process. “I’m relieved,” Cavener said. “There was no change. I didn’t expect it to be a change, but I’m relieved to have this piece behind us.”

He continued saying he was ‘disappointed’ this had to happen.

“I’m really disappointed in the amount of tax dollars that we had to waste on a vanity errand because my opponent didn’t like the results of election day,” he said.

BoiseDev reached out to Hon for a comment but did not hear back by deadline.
