Smooth(er) sailing: Highway 55 construction near Smiths Ferry wraps for winter

The Idaho Transportation Department announced that Highway 55 construction near Smiths Ferry will be suspended for the winter.

Both lanes will now be completely open until mid-March 2022. After that, spring construction will resume, which consists of partial closures and when open, one-way alternating traffic.

During fall construction, ITD says crews were able to build a retaining wall, remove materials, and complete 74 blasts. However, there was also a large rockslide that caused a total road closure through the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The ongoing construction is part of a major project to improve Highway 55 between Smiths Ferry and Rainbow Bridge. Crews have been working on widening the road, adding guardrails, and straightening the curvy area of the highway.

ITD expects the Smiths Ferry project to be completed by the late fall of 2022. To receive updates, you can text “Alerts” to (833) 480-0255.
