Owner of Golden Wheel drive-in, pro fisherman Bink Desaro dies

Jamie “Bink” Desaro died earlier this month. He was 52. His death was announced in an obituary placed last week.

Desaro popped up on BoiseDev recently when he decided to reopen the classic Golden Wheel Drive-In on Fairview Ave. in Boise. The restaurant initially closed last summer due to staffing challenges. But Desaro decided to give it another go. He pared down the menu, sticking to lower intensity items like fries, finger steaks, and ice cream treats.

The Desaro family kept a low profile in Boise, but worked behind the scenes for causes they cared about – with annual fundraisers for the WCA, 4-H car shows, and fundraisers for the Foundation for Suicide Prevention. An annual fishing tournament, held in honor of Bink Desaro’s father Jimmie, is held each year in Cascade. Jimmie died in 2015.

Bink Desaro was a champion bass fisherman – once giving an excited interview to about his second-place finish in a major tournament in 2004. The then-34-year old rookie lost by just a few ounces but was gracious in the effort.

“I’m just honored to be here with a fisherman like (first-place winner) Denny (Brauer),” Desaro told ESPN at the time, “because he’s been one of my heroes for years, even out in Idaho.”

For now, Golden Wheel is again closed.

Desaro’s Facebook profile has been switched over to “in memorial” mode, with dozens of friends, colleagues, and fans sharing their memories.
