Deal Flow: $3.5 billion in deals: Idaho saw hundreds of companies raise money, merge or sell in 2021

The yearly Idaho Deal Flow Report was released Tuesday during the annual Capital Connect Conference in Boise. The report tracks hundreds of mergers, acquisitions, investments and other financial transactions from Idaho companies throughout 2021.

The report showed $3.5 billion in total deal volume through 2021, a decrease from 2020 when the report showed $5.22 billion in activity. However, the 2020 report saw a boost from Albertsons Companies’ initial public offering at $1.7 billion and Ericcson’s purchase of Cradlepoint for $1.1 billion. Many transactions don’t reveal the total investment, and that data is also not reflected in the overall dollar volume.

The report tracked slightly more deals than last year – 155 in 2021 versus 152 in 2020. Idaho Deal Flow co-chair and founder Blake Hansen noted that the report could be missing as many as 40% of the actual deals that occur in the state for a variety of factors, including businesses that prefer to keep deals quiet.

It’s the sixth straight year an Idaho company has gone public via an initial public offering.

Alturas Capital of Eagle has produced the report with data going back twelve years, in partnership with the Idaho Technology Council. In all, the report has captured information on more than 1,700 deals with a total known volume of more than $54 billion.

2021 highlights

  • Boise cloud software firm took in a pair of private placements during the year as BoiseDev reported – in March and in December – totaling $135-million.

The report, which is not yet available online, also highlights a number of other deals BoiseDev profiled throughout the year, including conversions to employee ownership by Commercial Tire and Tates Rents.
