‘Macabre’: New Orleans-inspired sports pub set for old Spacebar spot

Boise’s historic Adelman Building at the corner of Idaho St. and Capitol Blvd. downtown will get another new bar.

Voodoo Cellar plans to open in the old Spacebar space, in the basement level of the building.

“Voodoo (Cellar) is a New Orleans-inspired pub with 8K TVs, a custom hardwood beer pong table, a jukebox, and gaming on consoles & arcade machines, all in a macabre, softly purple-lit Voodoo lounge,” a manager wrote on Facebook. “Our bar features a dozen craft beers on tap, a Voodoo-themed cocktail menu, and dozens of other adult beverages in bottles & cans!”

Voodoo is owned by David Hermansen of Meridian and Jimmy Eskelsen of Kuna. The pair wrote online that this idea has percolated for quite a while: “Jimmy & Dave discussed the idea for well over a decade before actually jumping in head first and bringing their vision to life.”

A grand opening party is set just in time for Halloween on October 29th. It joins another new bar in the building – Liga Boise, which opened on the ground floor last month.

Voodoo has a beer and wine license from the State of Idaho, according to records. Building permits show it will mostly keep the Spacebar layout with updates to finishes.

Spacebar floating

Spacebar closed in April, ahead of a new location nearby in the old Louie’s building.

“Our flight path was set off course by the overlords of the Alturas Galaxy,” Spacebar managers creatively wrote on Facebook. “Forced off-planet months before planned, we sealed the doors to Spacebar 2.0 on April 8th, 2022 with no option but to orbit until cleared to enter the habitable zone of Kepler-22b (aka 620 Idaho Street).”

Spacebar had hoped to open in May – then July – then September. It still remains closed.

When construction is complete, the new Spacebar space will be more than 4,700 square feet and take over a large portion of the lower level of the historic Louie’s building.

Update: After the publication of this story, Voodoo Brews told BoiseDev it planned to rename the business Voodoo Cellar.
