Simplot’s ag retail division expands to Canada with acquisition of independent retailer

Date:

Boise-based JR Simplot Company announced it would expand into Canada, adding to its growing division focused on providing services and products to farmers.

Simplot Grower Solutions will add 15 locations with the acquisition of Saskatchewan-based G-Mac’s AgTeam. The purchase marks the first expansion for the division outside of the US. The deal will grow the company to more than 245 locations across the US and now Canada.

“We’re thrilled to expand our retail footprint in Western Canada and to provide products and services to help local growers get the most out of every acre,” Simplot Grower Solutions VP & GM Troy Bolt said. “We welcome the new employees, customers, and partners and look forward to continuing the G-Mac’s AgTeam legacy of delivering exceptional service and sound agronomic advice.”

The Simplot Grower Solutions division was founded in 1945 as Simplot Soilbuilders, with a retail farm service store in Caldwell. The division sells fertilizer, crop nutrition, seed and other products to farmers.

The division has completed a string of acquisitions in recent years. In 2019, the company purchased Pinnacle Agriculture, significantly expanding its footprint. It’s added a number of smaller companies to the portfolio in recent years. The company rebranded the Pinnacle locations and folded them into its agribusiness unit.

G-Mac’s AgTeam was founded by Garth McDonald in 2000, and grew to 15 locations across the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The company called itself the “largest independently owned crop input retailer in North America.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
