More police officers in Meridian schools

Six additional School Resource Officers were deployed in Meridian elementary schools this month.
Meridian Mayor Robert Simison proposed the positions after the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas where 19 children and two teachers were killed. Meridian City Council approved the funding for the new positions last August.
āI am grateful to city council who also saw the need and approved these officers, for the men and women of Meridian Police Department who put this request into reality, and the partnership with the West Ada School District,ā Simison said in a news release.
The Meridian Police Department currently has 19 SROs in Meridian schools. Their duties consist of filing investigative reports, patrolling, providing security and sporting events, maintaining building security, and enforcing traffic laws.
